Senior Design Team sdmay21-07 • Small rotor-craft obstacle avoidance Imaging radar
Our project is a proof-of-concept prototype of a RADAR imaging system. This system will be able to detect obstacles, such as overhead powerlines or guy wires, and produce an image to alert an operator to avoid such obstacle. It will achieve this by interfacing multiple parts. These include an antenna to detect the obstacle through electromagnetic propagation, circuits to obtain the signal from the antenna, a microcontroller to read the data from the circuitry, and finally a computer to process the data into an image that an operator can easily read and base decisions from. The system is especially useful in low visibility situations, such as fog or intense sunlight. The system will lower the probability of property damage to the rotor-craft using the system and the power lines the craft may collide with. The system will also help prevent injury to those close to said craft.
